Dr. Dhanesha Gunawardena is a compassionate and highly experienced General Practitioner with over 20 years of diverse medical experience, spanning multiple countries and clinical environments. She brings a global perspective to her practice, combining deep medical knowledge with a commitment to patient-centred, holistic care.
Dr. Gunawardena obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2000 in Sri Lanka. Early in her career, she worked as an anaesthetist for five years, gaining valuable experience in surgical care, acute medicine, and critical care settings—skills that continue to inform her well- rounded approach to general practice.
She went on to serve for 11 years as a civilian General Practitioner with the Royal Air Force of Oman, providing comprehensive medical care to a culturally diverse population. This experience significantly enriched her clinical
capabilities and deepened her understanding of family medicine across a wide spectrum of health conditions.
In 2017, Dr. Gunawardena relocated to Australia, joining Wynyard Medical Centre in 2018, where she has since become a highly regarded member of the medical team. Her dedication to continued learning and excellence in care led her to achieve her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2022.

Women’s Health – supporting patients through all life stages, from reproductive health and contraception to menopause management.
Child & Adolescent Health – with a focus on growth, development, and emotional wellbeing.
Mental Health – providing a safe, empathetic space for patients facing emotional or psychological challenges.
Elderly Health & Aged Care – managing complex conditions with sensitivity and a focus on quality of life.
Chronic Disease Management – offering long-term, coordinated care for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
Dr. Gunawardena is deeply committed to building strong therapeutic relationships, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected, and supported. Her calm and caring manner, combined with her depth of clinical knowledge, makes her a trusted and approachable healthcare provider for individuals and families alike.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Gunawardena enjoys spending time with her family, connecting with the local community, and exploring the natural beauty of Tasmania. She remains devoted to improving health outcomes and empowering her patients to take charge of their wellbeing.
