Living in Burnie

The City of Burnie is located on Emu Bay and is home to around 20,000 residents. The area has a vibrant shopping district with a wide variety of dining options including beach side cafes. Burnie boasts a number of galleries and performance venues and it enjoys easy access to lush green hills and the wilder landscape of Cradle Mountain. It is even said that the dairy farms surrounding Burnie produce the best milk in the world for cheese making: you can test this yourself at the award winning dairies!

Burnie has a public and private hospital and it has a number of public and private primary and secondary schools. Burnie is home to numerous sporting and social organisations and is also home to the Cradle Coast campus of the University of Tasmania and campuses of the Tasmanian Polytechnic and the Tasmanian Academy.

 

Burnie experiences temperate conditions, with an average maximum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer and 13.5 degrees Celsius (56.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter.

Location & Accessibility

Burnie is approximately 30 minutes from Devonport and approximately 90 minutes from Launceston. Burnie has a regional airport located in the adjacent town of Wynyard - a 20 minute drive from the city of Burnie – which operates regular flights to mainland Australia.

Practice Benefits

The practice offers a competitive remuneration package based on percentage of earnings and welcomes discussions with potential candidates. The practice offers a generous relocation grant, as well as four weeks paid accommodation and use of a vehicle upon arrival.

 

In conjunction with the practice, The People Project will organise a comprehensive orientation program on arrival. Vocationally recognised GPs are invited to apply for a People Project relocation grant.

 

Doctors trained outside Australia working in this location will meet the moratorium requirements after seven years of practice.
